Walk Into Court Organized: The Automated Trial Binder
Judges notice when a party can find the right exhibit in seconds. The Trial Binder turns a stack of evidence into one labeled, page-numbered binder in about a minute.
Evidence rarely arrives neatly. You may have a lease as a PDF, photos on your phone, text messages as screenshots, and receipts in a drawer. In court, you need all of it in order, labeled, and easy to find, often with copies for the judge and the other side.
What the Trial Binder does
Upload your PDFs, JPGs, and PNGs, put them in order by section, and click Build binder. Kasecraft adds:
- a cover page and a table of contents,
- section dividers and a labeled divider for every exhibit (Exhibit A, B, C or 1, 2, 3),
- the exhibit label on every page, and
- page numbers throughout.
You can turn pages in the viewer, jump straight to any exhibit, print, save the full binder as a PDF, or download just one page, exhibit, or section.
The Evidence Builder
Some evidence does not start as a document. Text messages, emails, and social media posts often need to be turned into an exhibit first. The Evidence Builder lets you paste text and screenshots, add JPG, PNG, or PDF files, put the pieces in order, and export to Word or PDF. Then add it to your binder as a new exhibit.
Tips for using your binder in court
- Check your court's rules on exhibit labels and how many copies to bring.
- Bring copies for the judge and the other side, and keep your own.
- Know your exhibit numbers. When you refer to evidence, say "Exhibit C, page 3," so everyone can follow.
- Remove private information that is not needed, such as account numbers. The Drafting Studio's sensitive-information check can help you spot it.
Cost
The Trial Binder is $14.99 a month on its own, or included with any Kasecraft membership.
Food for Thought
- Should a case ever turn on how well a party organizes paperwork rather than on the facts?
- Many courts now accept electronic exhibits. Does that make things easier for self-represented people, or harder for those without the right technology?
- How much should a judge help an unrepresented party who cannot find the right exhibit?
Moot Court
When legal fees are out of reach, you do not have to walk into court alone and unprepared. Each edition, we look at one Kasecraft tool and how it helps self-represented litigants present their case with confidence.
What it does
Practice civil and criminal hearings, trials, and mediations with volunteer judges, opposing sides, and witnesses, using made-up facts. The judge runs real phases: openings, each side's case, closings, a ruling, and a feedback round.
An example
Maria has a small claims hearing in three weeks against a contractor who never finished her kitchen. She has never spoken in court. She sets up a practice case with similar made-up facts. In the first run, the volunteer judge interrupts her opening twice, and she loses her place. In the feedback round, the judge suggests she answer questions directly, then return to her outline. By her third session, she finishes her opening in under four minutes and handles interruptions calmly.
Why it puts you in a stronger position
- Nerves and surprise questions are where self-represented people struggle most. Rehearsal turns the courtroom from unknown territory into familiar ground.
- Hearing your argument out loud exposes weak points while there is still time to fix them.
- Practicing against a volunteer "opposing side" prepares you for the arguments you will actually face.
- Every session adds practical hours to a verifiable transcript, documented proof of preparation.
Cost: Free for members; $5.00 per hour for non-members.
